Curl up with these Victorian mystery series books:
Below Stairs Mystery Series by Jennifer Ashley
Follow Kat Holloway, a cook with a secret, as she bakes up feasts and lives in a world of Victorian manners and customs. As she finds herself in mysteries, she is helped along by the mysterious handsome man, Daniel, who is never what he seems. A look into the life below stairs in the world of the invisible working service class of London’s elite. Jennifer Ashley has an author newsletter to keep up to date on her books.
Lily Adler Mystery Series by Katharine Schellman
A young newly widowed Lily is an independent spirit in the world of society. She is determined not to sit at home and hide away her life. This new series takes a look as she inadvertantly has the only evidence of murder and the cover up that happens at the ball in which it happens. Not to let it go, she plunges on with the help of 2 others. This is a promising new series that I enjoyed and look forward to continuing. Katharine Schellman has an active author page to keep up to date on her book endeavors.
Lady Emily Mystery Series by Tasha Alexander
Lady Emily and her handsome husband Colin travel the circuit of the wealthy but with an interesting twist. Tasha Alexander folllows a particular structure for all of her books in this series. Alternating chapters back and forth from an earlier ancient historical story line with a current Victorian story line entwining the two in the end which answers both storylines.
For example, we follow Lady Emily on a trip to Mt. Vesuvius as a tourist encountering a mystery along the way while alternating chapters that follow a Roman servant girl living in that same village before the mountain erupted in the ancient past.
As the two stories unfold, each in their own time settings, they converge in the end as Lady Emily observes the remains of a young girl preserved in the ash and the mystery of why she is holding a knife. A very interesting and refreshing touch. Tasha Alexander is married to another famous author, Andrew Child, of Jack Reacher fame.
Amelia Peabody Mystery Series by Elizabeth Peters
Ahh, Amelia Peabody! What can I say? She and I go way back on a plane trip as I hurriedly grabbed a paperback to take with me. Thus started a long reading affair with the famous Amelia Peabody series that I have followed for many years. This series follows unfortunate beginnings of Amelia in Victorian England as she makes her way into the dusty hot world of British archeology in Egypt. The mysterious world of Egyptian finds during this time are still some of the most amazing finds ever made in history.
Elizabeth Peters herself was an Egyptologist and weaves true finds and famous people throughout her stories. Weaving family life and characters from marriage all the way through raising their precocious son and adopted daughter, fans of Amelia Peabody feel that they journey along with them throughout the series into dusty lands as if they are part of the family. This series will always have a special place in my reading favorites.
Gower St. Detectives by M.R.C. Kasasian
For fans of Sherlock Holmes, this series has all the flavor with a new perspective. Follow Sidney Grice and his unexpected new ward March Middleton through the dark and foggy streets of London. Temperamental and mercurial, the detective is prone to bouts of brooding and Miss March must carry on as his unflappable assistant. Enjoy the old flavor of the pea-soup fog in Victorian London.
Murder in Old Bombay by Nev March
Follow Captain Jim Agnihotri through British India as he comes home from battle to unravel the mystery of the two ladies who “jumped” from the local tower. Did they commit dual suicide or is there something more sinister going on behind the scenes? Nev March captures the rich tapestry of India during the height of the British empire with all its customs and vibrant colors. I enjoyed reading this series for the exotic and foreign flavor of the time and place. Nev March visited the actual tower where the real life incident that inspired her book is based off of.
