Wood, concrete, and recycled items for planters: how to make, what to put in them and when.
Want to spiff up your place with some beautiful planters? Now that we’ve discussed some of our favorite indoor plant books to get you started beautifying your home, let’s take a look at the outside areas as we get ready for summer. I have seen some of the prices for larger planters in the gardening store and it makes me gasp. It’s not that hard to make a few yourself ranging from wood to concrete to recycled items and can be a great family project to do together.

DIY Wood Planter Boxes
I just love all things wood! These beauties aren’t hard to make and can be stained any shade you like. There are lots of great resources if you need other wood planter ideas or want to expand your outdoor decor into furniture to match. If you’ve got wood scraps in your shop you can put them to work for you and avoid the high lumber prices.
Concrete Planters
Concrete planters are a great way to make multiples and get creative or you can use a hypertufa mixture. Don’t forget that you can also color your concrete with mixture colorant or topical paint for that big decorative factor if you don’t want the natural greyish color. This is a fun project with the kids by using oddly shaped containers or old hollowed out toys as molds.
Spiff up you current planters
For those who already have planters but maybe they are not quite adding any decor element, you can spray paint and use your cutter for vinyl add ons. Just stick them on or use them for reverse stencils for a no-shaky hand easy option.
DIY expensive planters
Did you see a few planters in the store that would be the perfect fit only to see the huge sticker price? There are quite a few articles online on making them yourself for quite a bit less. Even better, just re-use those old items sitting around collecting dust.
Got your planters or window box, now what?
You have your pretty planters but don’t know which plants to choose to make them look gorgeous? Got a window box that’s all ready to go but now to put it up? There actually is a better way to install those window boxes to protect your house siding then just tacking them up there with a few screws.
But when should I plant up my planter?
Ok so you have these pretty awesome planters, you’ve uncovered the lawn furniture, dragged out the sprinklers from the garage and are excited for spring to finally be here…..
Just like a kid bouncing up and down impatient to get to their favorite activity, we tend to plant too early around here. I don’t know why we are always surprised by that last winter burst and frost that taunts us and says, “Fake out, just kidding!” Don’t be us and waste plants by planting too early.
Want to know when to plant for your area? We are in a dry prairie dessert and our planting date (like a horse race gate) is Mother’s Day to avoid those freak frosts. If you aren’t in the same type of zone or frost pattern, you can check out when to plant at these great places:
